JULY 2019 87

The Lion King

has been busy
turning its old cartoon movies
into live-action reimaginations.
Big question: Will The Lion King
be a shot-for-shot remake of the
original flick?

The answer: hakuna matata.
Disney fans won’t have
anything to worry about.
While some scenes will surely
feel familiar to induce nostalgia
for the movie first released
25 years ago, this 2019
film will also feature some
new things.

The movie also begs another
question: how does it fit in the
live-action category? It’s still
made with CGI. Well, not entirely.
The Lion King reboot blends
photo-realistic CGI and live-action
film together.

DISNEY

Opens July 19 • Walt Disney Pictures

Of course, all your favorite Lion
King songs are back, too. With
Hans Zimmer and Elton John
back on board for the film,
audiences can sing along again
to classics like the Circle of Life,
Hakuna Matata, and Can You Feel
the Love Tonight.

The director behind the live-
action reboot of The Jungle Book,
Jon Favreau, is at the helm of
The Lion King.

The Lion King’s stellar cast
includes Donald Glover as Simba,
Seth Rogan as Pumbaa, Chiwetel
Ejiofor as Scar, Billy Eichner as
Timon, and Beyoncé as Nala.
James Earl Jones is the only
member of the original cast to
reprise his role. He breathes
life into the role of Mufasa
once again.

They say when an X-Men movie
is released, the film gods flip a coin.
It’s either good or bad. There is no
in between. And so having another
X-Men movie might raise some
eyebrows. But there is hope;
The New Mutants isn’t anything
like its predecessors.

First of all, The New Mutants doesn’t
even feel like an X-Men movie, based
on the trailers. If you’re of a fan of
both superhero movies and the horror
genre, this refreshing take might
appeal to you. Even those who love
coming-of-age flicks will get a kick
out of this film.

Instead of Xavier’s School for the
Gifted, this new band of super-
powered teens finds themselves in
a secret facility that looks more
like an insane asylum. They’re in
that place against their will, too.
It’s like puberty isn’t tough enough,
right? Imagine going through
adolescence and discovering you
have superhuman abilities.

Meet Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball,
Sunspot, and Mirage. Their powers
differ very much from each other,
but their struggle is the same:
they just want to get out of the
haunted hospital.

Josh Boone is in the director’s seat.
He has previously worked on mostly
romance films like the tear-jerking
The Fault in Our Stars and Stuck in
Love. The New Mutants is definitely
a step in a new direction for the
director. Boone’s got a love for the
original New Mutants comics and
even created a comic book with
childhood best friend Knate Lee using
panels from the original comics.
