A second way you might redesign grid-based blocks is to
add another row of grids. I used this idea when making the
Sampler Supreme (page 99). I love the Goose in the Pond
block, which is a 5 × 5 grid. I added another row of grids,
which brings it to a 7 × 7 grid. I then made two minor
changes to redesign the block. I ended up not using it in my
quilt, but I will use the block some other time.

It is important that you have a clear understanding of
the 8-pointed star drafting category in order to follow
this process (page 44).
I enjoy the design process of fracturing existing shapes or
removing shapes within designs in the 8-pointed star drafting
category. This category is different from grid-based blocks,
however, because the equality of 8-pointed star designs lies
between the star points rather than in equal grids of squares
across and down the block.
