Drafting for the Creative Quilter

(Marcin) #1

PAUSE 97

  1. Add Border 1 to the bottom edge of the block and
    press toward the border.

BORDER 2
Shown as blue in the Quilt Border Assembly (page 96).

  1. Join 7 sawtooth units together and press the seams
    open.

  2. Cut a 11/4 ̋ × 4 ̋ strip of fabric and join it to the 7
sawtooth units; press toward the fabric strip.

  3. Cut a 13/4 ̋ × 95/8 ̋ strip of fabric. Add it to the saw-
tooth unit and press toward the fabric strip.

  4. Add Border 2 to the left side of the quilt. Start
sewing at the sawtooth end and stop sewing an inch or
so past the sawteeth. This partial seam will be com-
pleted after you add Border 5.

BORDER 3
Shown as yellow in the Quilt Border Assembly (page 96).

  1. Cut a 11/2 ̋ × 23/4 ̋ strip of fabric.

  2. Cut a 11/2 ̋ × 103/8 ̋ strip of fabric.

  3. Sew the 2 strips together, end to end, and press the
    seam open.

  4. Add Border 3 to the bottom of the quilt.

BORDER 4
Shown as green in the Quilt Border Assembly (page 96).

This border consists of three strips sewn together
and then added to the quilt as one. Cut and sew them
together exactly as explained to reveal the 1/8 ̋ strip. Do
not mix up the strip number or their order of sewing
once you have cut them. You cannot move them around.

  1. Cut Strip 1 to 3/4 ̋ × 131/2 ̋.

  2. Cut Strip 2 to 1 ̋ × 131/2 ̋.

  3. Cut Strip 3 to 13/8 ̋ × 131/2 ̋.

  4. Sew Strip 1 to Strip 2 and press the stitches. Trim
the 1/4 ̋ seam allowance to an exact 1/8 ̋ by placing the 1/8 ̋
line of the ruler over the thread line and trimming away
the excess seam allowance. Press toward Strip 2.

  5. Pair Strip 1–2 with Strip 3, with Strip 3 on the
bottom. Align the edges of Strips 2 and 3, but sew next
to the just-trimmed seam allowance. Sew straight and
slowly. How well you cut and sew is how straight and
even the 1/8 ̋ strip will be.
    6. Press the stitches, trim the excess seam allowance to
within 1/8 ̋ of the last line of stitches, and press toward
    Strip 3.
    7. Cut this strip unit to 127/8 ̋ and add it to the right side
    of the quilt.

BORDER 5
Shown as orange in the Quilt Border Assembly (page 96).

  1. Sew 7 sawtooth units together and press the seams
    open.

  2. Cut 1 strip of fabric 1 ̋ × 83/4 ̋, join it to the sawtooth,
    and press toward the strip.

  3. Cut 1 strip 11/4 ̋ × 121/4 ̋, add it to the sawtooth strip,
and press toward the plain strip. Add this to the top of
    the quilt.
Noteworthy: Now align the free edge of Border 2 to the
quilt edge and complete the partial seam.

BORDER 6
Cut 1 strip of fabric 21/4 ̋ × 141/8 ̋ and add it to the left
side of the quilt.

BORDER 7
Cut 1 strip of fabric 31/8 ̋ × 151/4 ̋ and add it to the top of
the quilt.

BORDER 8
Cut 1 strip of fabric 21/4 ̋ × 151/4 ̋ and add it to the
bottom of the quilt.

BORDER 9
This border is created in three sections: a bottom rect-
angle, a top rectangle, and three small Bear’s Paw blocks.

  1. Make a template for L (page 98).

  2. Cut 1 top rectangle 25/8 ̋ × 103/8 ̋.

  3. Cut 1 bottom rectangle 25/8 ̋ × 21/4 ̋.

  4. A: Use the 12 sawtooth units, 4 for each paw, created
in Steps 2 and 3 of Sawteeth, page 96.

  5. E: Cut 3 squares 11/2 ̋ × 11/2 ̋ from the paw fabric
    for bear paws.

  6. D: Cut 3 squares 1 ̋ × 1 ̋ from the background for
    bear paws.

  7. L: Cut 12 L triangles, from the background, 4 for
    each bear paw.
