Hearts at 150: A gateway to history

WHEN A SHOP in Morningside became
available, Paper Tiger owner, Michael
Apter, jumped at the opportunity.
Now there are three branches of the
independent card and gift shop in town,
the most recent taking the space on
Morningside Road occupied by
Paperchase until the chain’s demise.
Michael said: “I am indebted to
Catherine Rayner for taking my very basic
idea, and turning it into something very
special that has brought tears of delight to
my eyes. I sincerely hope that, like
Augustus, the tiger, you can also find your
smile at Paper Tiger. We have Catherine’s
very special baby wear range on the
shelves of the new shop alongside her
cards and books.
“The support of our suppliers and their
reps and agents has been both spectacular
and very emotional. We work with over
200 makers, illustrators, designers, and
publishers, and their delight in our growth
has been an amazing experience for me. I
can’t namecheck them all, but we are
blessed to have our industry behind us all
the way. Thank you.”

THE AWARD-WINNING One Spa at the
Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa announced
an exciting partnership with Hot Yoga
Edinburgh to host Scotland’s largest free
outdoor yoga event on the Summer
solstice on Wednesday, 21 June in
Conference Square in the heart of the
City’s financial district.
The hour-long yoga practice, which is
being held from 6pm to 7pm, is open to
over 300 people from 16 years upwards
and has been designed with wellness in
mind by inviting locals, yoga enthusiasts,
hotel guests and local businesses to
down tools and invest that extra hour on
the longest day in some much needed
‘me time’ whilst helping to promote
mental health awareness.
The class will combine a series of
standing, balancing and floor poses to
give a full body stretch, with a strong
focus on the breath, leaving everyone
feeling restored and energised.
HEARTS’ CHAIR, Ann Budge
and the Chair of the Foundation
of Hearts , Gerry Mallon unveiled
the first marker of the club’s
150th season which begins after
the break. The new gate at
Gerards Yard features for the first
time a specially designed
emblem. Manufactured locally
by club partner, Hepburn
Fabrications, the gate is formed
of solid steel with the beautiful
new emblem forged in
aluminium.
Chair, Ann Budge said: “We all
know that some 10 years ago,
there was a real danger that
Hearts would not have reached
this magnificent milestone. The
incredible backing of supporters
and the Foundation of Hearts
changed history and now, as the
largest fan-owned club in the UK,
we will celebrate 150 years as a
Scottish football icon, safe in the
knowledge that the future of the
club has been secured for future
generations to come.“

CONSTRUCTION HAS begun
on a major part of the largest
renewable hub in Scotland at
the Port of Leith which is expected
to be operational by summer 2024.
The new riverside marine berth
is now being constructed as
part of a large £50 million
project by Forth Ports.
The renewable energy hub will
be built on a 175 acre site, easily
accessed by Edinburgh Trams’ route
to Newhaven. The site will be used
for manufacturing, marshalling and
logistics, supporting the country’s
economic recovery and Scotland’s
journey to net zero.
Forth Ports are behind the
project as they own the land that
the bespoke riverside berth will be
constructed on. The berth will be
able to take the largest offshore
wind installation vessels because of
its size and the sea depths of the
Firth of Forth. The berth will have
a heavy lift capability of up to 100
tonnes per square metre. Specialist
contractors GRAHAM are creating
the berth immediately inside the
dock gates. This means that any
vessels do not have to enter the
locked port itself leading to faster
turnaround times. Forth Ports
hope that the hub will be used
when ScotWind build their
anticipated pipeline for their fixed
and floating projects as well as
other planned developments.
