Working woman
W
hile many of us dream of
escaping the stresses of
the world of work, it might
be worth making a career plan
instead – research suggests
that women who work in midlife tend to be happier
and live longer. The study, published in the journal
Demography, found that those who worked until
around the age of 64 reported fewer incidences
of depression and a 2 5 percent lower risk of death
than those who didn’t. Whether that’s a side hustle
to accompany childcare or a whole new direction
for your future, the key to reaping these rewards is
to find a job that is satisfying (and pays an income),
promoting improved feelings of stability and
helping us to feel valued. Now that’s a work perk.
