Resource Guide 279
no phone numbers have been included. Remember that
the daily full course fixed-price lunch menu is the
best bargain.
La Paz
A restaurant guide for La Paz alone would occupy an entire
volume. Here are a few unique eating places with loyal
regulars. Apologies to many superb La Paz eateries not
included here.
Café Torino
Torino Hotel, Calle Socabaya 457
Situated in a superb colonial patio of Hotel Torino.
Fixed-price lunches are like abuela used to cook, basic
but authentic. Good drinking atmosphere and cultural
happenings as poets and professors show up in groups
from time to time.
Chicharronería Irpavi
Irpavi, south zone
Best fried pork in La Paz. This proletarian, weekend-only
patio restaurant began as a small riverside stand, later
winning an international award in Madrid. You can see
meat hanging behind a glass window before you eat it.
Served with indigenous brew, chicha, and white corn. This
insider’s place is now a living myth.
Gringo Limón (01)
Plaza Abaroa 2497 at 20 de Octubre
Tel: (2) 243-4429
Offers a chance to eat Tarija’s food without travelling to
Tarija. Speciality is grilled meats. Recommended is lamb,
lechón al horno (roast baby pig) and the parrillada (mixed
grilled meats).
Gringo Limón (02)
Plaza Humboldt
Tel: (2) 279-0991
The copious salad bar is the alternative, with both easily
recognised from afar thanks to the lemon-yellow façade.
