Almuerzo Buffet. This may be the best five-star bargain in
town, all you can eat for a reasonable price at an altitude
where you’re not supposed to have big meals. Plenty of
variety for all courses, including superb desserts.
 Iglu
One branch in Miraflores, near the stadium, another at
Plaza del Estudiante. Thirty years of hamburgers. For
US$ 0.60 you get a crisp, tasty hamburger and fries. Only
place in La Paz serving juice of the tumbo fruit. A worthy
rival of McDonalds and Burger King. Iglu will survive
the competition.
 Nelsy’s
Right across from the university. Cheap, ma-and-pa food.
Try pejerrey (kingfish), usually Fridays. Excellent salteñas in
the mornings, or cuñapes and humintas, afternoons. This
place is another living myth for insiders on a tight budget
in search of authenticity.

Santa Cruz

Many restaurants here have both indoor and outdoor
seating. If you’re tired of potatoes and corn in the highlands,
you’ll enjoy tropical side dishes here: fried yuca (replaces
potato), cooked or fried banana and rice with cheese
(replaces corn).

 Casa del Camba
Second ring, Cristobal de Mendoza 539
Tel: (3) 342-7864.
Economical creole food. Try the locro, a unique chicken
soup. Also, picante de gallina. Good way to taste the Camba
