Step Five: Go to Layer>New>
Layer, and in the dialog that
appears, set the name to “Green
Light.” Enable the option to Use
Previous Layer to Create Clipping
Mask, and click OK. Next, load
the luminous values of the image
by pressing Shift-Option-Com-
mand-2 (PC: Shift-Alt-Ctrl-2),
and then click the Add Layer
Mask icon (circle in a square) at
the bottom of the Layers panel.
Photoshop will use the selection
to create the mask.
Click on the Green Light layer
thumbnail in the Layers panel to
change the focus to the layer, not
the mask. Grab the Brush tool (B)
and set the tip to a very large, soft
round tip. Set the Foreground
color to a bright green (#48e523),
and reduce the brush Opacity to
30% in the Options Bar. Begin
painting a color cast onto the
right side of the face and body.
The clipped mask combined with
the layer mask makes sure the
paint only falls onto the bright
portions of the model’s face
and shoulder. Painting multiple
strokes will build up the effect.
Notice that we added a little
green on his shoulder on the left,
as well.
Step Six: Use the Polygonal
Lasso tool (nested under the
Lasso tool [L] in the Toolbar) to
create a selection of the side of
the model’s head to carve out.
Start about halfway up the cheek,
continue along the ridge of the
nose between the eyes and up
vertically across the forehead.
Click back on the starting point to
close the selection. Make sure the
Man layer is the active layer, and
go to Layer>Layer Mask>Hide
Selection to conceal that selected
portion with the layer mask.
