BERLIN

KATE SYLVESTER

The New Zealand designer is taken

with this culturally rich German city

WHERE TO GO: “Mitte, the historic centre. Get
off the main avenues and wind through charming
shops and cafes. Visit Neukölln [borough] for more
edgy new bars, galleries and multicultural energy.”

WHERE TO STAY AND EAT: “Soho House—it
sets the standard for what other hotels should
aspire to. Modern and relaxed, with impeccable,
seamless service. Pauly Saal is a truly beautiful
restaurant in a historic Jewish school.
The tasting menu changes constantly, so be
prepared to be surprised and delighted. Mogg
beside Pauly Saal is a very hip American
deli that does supersonic pastrami sandwiches.”

WHAT TO DO: “Cycle everywhere, especially
through Tiergarten, Berlin’s beautiful central park.
The city is totally flat and Berliners are incredibly
polite and tolerant of cyclists. I love the Sunday flea
market at Arkonaplatz. It has great vintage stuff and
you can sip prosecco as you browse. For fun, visit
the Helmut Newton Foundation; it has more boobs
and bush than any mere mortal can comprehend!”

WHAT TO PACK: “I’m old school. I always keep
a travel diary, my YSL red lipstick, a headscarf
from my Frances collection, a novel that’s relevant
to the city I’m in and trousers because I haven’t
mastered a dress on a bike yet. Berliners are very,
very casual, so do keep your look effortless.”

“I pack a novel

that’s relevant to

the city I’m in”
