THE DIET IN A NUTSHELL
The number of people in the UK with dementia
is forecast to reach over one million by 2021.
Yet medical treatments for age-related
memory decline and loss of cognitive skills
have so far had limited success. Adopting
a healthy diet and lifestyle have been among
the most consistent recommendations to
maintain brain health over the long term.
Diets associated with a lower risk of cognitive
decline and dementia are those higher in
non-starchy vegetables, fruits, wholegrains,
nuts, legumes and seafood, and lower in red
and or processed meats, sugary drinks and
foods, refined grains and added salt.
Scientists at the University Medical Centre
in Chicago and the Harvard T.H. Chan School
of Public Health are currently running a diet
trial for mild weight loss that is also specifically
designed to optimise brain health. It’s known
as the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for
Neurodegenerative Delay – or the MIND diet.

done as part of the Rush Memory and Ageing
Project (a long term, wide-ranging examination
of ageing) have revealed that a MIND-style
