WHY A CALORIE
CURFEW WORKS
The old adage ‘breakfast like a
king, lunch like a prince and dine
like a pauper’ may be sound
advice, especially for women,
suggests a new US study.
Research involving 112 young
women over a year found
those who consumed a higher
proportion of their calories in
the evening had a greater risk
of cardiovascular disease. Every
1% increase in calories after
6pm was linked to higher blood
pressure and body mass index,
and poorer long-term control
of blood sugar – all risk factors
for poorer heart health. More
research is needed to build on
these findings, but you won’t go
far wrong having a bigger bowl
of porridge for breakfast and less
pasta with your evening meal.

60
minutes
a day is the amount of
activity 11 to 17-year-
olds need to do to
lower the risk to their
physical and mental
health, says a World
Health Organization
report. There’s work to
be done: currently, 80%
don’t hit this target.
