the 1980’s from the government’s perspective. It in-

Dedicated to Ryan White, the site includes an ex-
tensive discussion about the boy who was diagnosed
with AIDS at the age of thirteen and who gained in-
ternational recognition for his subsequent fight to

Designed as part of a 2001 University of Florida
research project, these sites summarize the effects of
several major corporate crises, including the Exxon
Valdez oil spill and the Tylenol tampering scare,
both of which occurred in the 1980’s. These sites an-
alyze how the corporations managed these crises
and discuss the long-term public impact of these
events.

This page from the British Broadcasting Corpora-
tion (BBC) News site examines the 1984 Bhopal
chemical spill—the worst industrial disaster in his-
tory. An estimated three thousand people died from
a chemical leak at a factory owned by Union Car-
bide, an American company. The site includes video
and audio coverage and reports the stories of survi-
vors, some 500,000 of whom still suffer from afteref-
fects.

Created to accompany an episode of the Public
Broadcasting Service’s (PBS) programAmerican Ex-
perience, this site provides information about Jimmy
Carter’s life before, during, and after his presidency,
as well as a discussion of the episode and a teacher’s
guide. It includes a time line, photos of Carter and
his family, and an in-depth examination of some of
the issues of his presidency, including his attempts to
bring peace to the Middle East and to end the Ira-
Iranian hostage crisis.
Canadian Constitutional Documents: A Legal His-
tory

The 1980’s saw a great deal of constitutional
change in Canada, not the least of which was the
Canada Act of 1982, in which Britain relinquished
the power to change Canada’s laws, including its
constitution. This site contains the text of the act, in
both English and French, describes the previous leg-
islation that the act amended, and summarizes the
act’s impact upon Canada.
