May 28 – first topped Coldwater


18-7 in five innings in a district


semi, and then prevailed 7-5 in 10


innings over JNW via a walk-off


home run by Codey Southfield.


As a result, HC (26-5-1) played


in a regional semifinal yesterday


(June 5) at Coldwater High against


Ionia (10-10). The winner of that


game will then play in a regional


final this Saturday (June 8) at 10


a.m. at Kalamazoo College against


the Otego district champ – with a


state quarterfinal there at approxi-


mately 2 p.m. taking place between


the two regional champs that will be


crowned at the site in the opening


two games Saturday.


Following now is a rundown of


how other local teams fared in dis-


trict tournaments last week.


BASEBALL

  • In the D-2 district hosted by
    Otsego, playing for the title this past
    Monday were Gull Lake (22-11)
    and Otsego (10-12). The winner will
    face Harper Creek in this coming
    Saturday’s 10 a.m. regional final at
    K-College.
    In earlier action at the Otsego dis-
    trict, Gull Lake eliminated Pennfield
    10-5 in the first round, and then beat
    Plainwell 11-3 in the district semifi-


nal.



  • In a Division 3 district hosted by
    Climax-Scotts, the C-S Co-Op squad
    (a co-op with St. Philip and Calhoun
    Christian) was upended 8-1 by Union
    City in the semifinal round.
    Also in the semifinal round there,
    Jonesville beat Bronson 10-2. And in
    the title game, Jonesville beat Union
    City 5-1.

  • In a D-3 district hosted by
    Parchment, Galesburg-Augusta won
    its semifinal last Saturday 10-0 in


six innings over Parchment, but lost
6-0 in the title game vs. Kalamazoo
Christian.


  • And, in a D-4 district at Mendon
    last Saturday, in the semifinals,
    Maple Valley beat Athens 15-0 and
    Mendon downed Tekonsha – with
    Maple alley going on to defeat
    Mendon 8-4 in the title game.

DIVISION 1
In the MHSAA D-1 Finals played
in the Midland area, Lakeview
High’s full squad competed – with
the Spartans winding up tied for 18th
place in the final standings.
Lakeview had qualified for the D-1
Championships via a runner-up fin-
ish at regionals a week earlier.
The Spartans – co-coached again
this year by Jeff Van Dis and Stuart
Smith – were one of 27 schools
represented at the D-1 tourney, and
scored four points. Winning the
overall team title was Clarkston.

For Lakeview in singles at state:


  • No. 1 Maddy Simonds, a fresh-
    man, first beat Rockford 6-4, 6-0 but
    then fell to Howell 6-4, 6-1.

  • No. 2 Sade Blackwell defeated
    Bloomfield Hills 6-3, 6-0, and
    was then eliminated 6-2, 6-2 by
    Clarkston.

  • No. 3 Emmy Ruger lost to Romeo
    6-0, 6-2.

  • And, No. 4 Caitlin Miller lost to
    Utica Eisenhower 6-4, 6-2.
    In doubles for the Spartans:

  • No. 1 Dawt Sung-Ashley
    Thawmluai lost to Clarkston 6-2, 6-0.

  • No. 2 KaiLani Etheridge-Karlee
    Gutsue defeated West Bloomfield
    7-6, 7-3 before losing to Clarkston
    6-0, 6-2.

  • No. 3 Tiffany Aungsoe-Abby
    Winer lost to Rochester Hills Stoney
    Creek 6-2, 6-3.

  • And, No. 4 Zoe Brizendine-Anya
    Foljahn lost to Ann Arbor Huron 6-2,
    6-1.
    The Spartans thus completed their
    season with the following accom-
    plishments:
    Division 1 regional second place,
    D-1 state qualifier (18th place),


SMAC East championship, All-City
champ, Allegan Invitational champ
and Lakeview Invitational titleist.
Lakeview’s overall record on the
campaign was 9-3-1.
Said co-coach Van Dis in a state-
ment: “To get to the state tournament
is a big accomplishment. The last
two years, the team qualified for the
Division 2 state tournament, and this
year we qualified for the Division 1
state tournament.
“It was one of our goals this season
to get back to the state meet, and I
am very proud of this team and what
they achieved. And the future looks
bright for the team.
“Also, a thank-you goes out to co-
varsity coach Stuart Smith for all his
dedication in helping out this group
of players.
“And overall, congratulations to the
Spartans this season.”
