The Cal-Co Quilters Guild has chosen Alicia Campbell as its Quilter of the Year.

Alicia Campbell is guild’s Quilter of the Year

The Cal-Co Quilters Guild has
named Alicia Campbell as Quilter of
the Year for 2024.
The guild is holding a quilt show
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday-
Saturday, July 12-13, at Marshall
United Methodist Church, according
to a guild press release.
Campbell, who joined the guild in
2012, will have a special booth at
the show, where visitors can see her
work.
Campbell explained that her mother
“taught me to sew when I was 8. I
made a few doll and baby quilts, but
mainly focused on clothing sewing. I
fell in love with sewing as a teenager
and decided to make a career of it.”
Campbell earned a bachelor's
degree in home economics from

Central Michigan University, and
later received a master’s in cloth-
ing and textiles from Texas Tech
University.
After returning to Michigan, she
was hired as a home economist for
Hancock Fabrics, where she taught,
designed patterns and learned about
the fabric industry.
“It is here that I developed my
love for quilting,” she said. “Once I
started quilting, I was hooked. Where
else could I have so much fun being
creative?”
After 11 years, she left Hancock
Fabrics and returned to Barry County.
In 2011, she purchased a long-arm
quilting machine and started her own
business, AKayCreations LLC.
“After 12 years, I now have two
machines and a thriving business
with wonderful customers,” said
Campbell, who also has developed
an interest in art quilts and fabric
dyeing.
“I was invited to join Syncopated

Threads, an art quilt group, last
year,” she noted. “This has added
even more to my passion.”
