Three from BCC compete in all-star football event
Three Battle Creek Central High student-athletes competed in the
second annual Damar Hamlin Charity Weekend all-star football game
and other events at the site on the weekend of June 7-9 in Pittsburgh – a
contingent headed by BCC assistant football coach Mario Brown. The
student-athletes were Marlin Jones, Michael Stein and Daepreist Andrews.
Saturday was a celebrity all-star game that received national exposure
and included celebrities from across the land. The BCC players then
competed in the prep all-star football game on Sunday. The weekend

Joey Mario, who just finished his
junior season at Harper Creek High,
is one of the 100-plus golfers from
around the state that is scheduled
to compete in the 48th Michigan
PGA Boys’ Junior Championship
Tournament on Thursday and
Friday, June 27-28, at Bedford
Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek.
The winner of the tourney for
age 13-18 players will represent
Michigan at the PGA National
Junior Boys’ Championship
event set for July 30-Aug. 2 at
Congressional Country Club in
Bethesda, MD.
During his junior campaign at
Harper Creek, Mario won All-
City individual medalist honors
while leading his Beavers’ squad
to the All-City team crown; and
he also qualified out of regionals
as an individual for the recently-
played Michigan High School
Athletic Association Division 2
Championships at Forest Akers
West Golf Course at Michigan
State University.
Aside from Mario, three other
linksters with local ties are also
scheduled to compete at Bedford
Valley for the state PGA Junior
event: Gull Lake High’s Max
VanderMolen (who helped GL post a
third-place finish at the MHSAA D-2
state finals), Scotts’ Riley Briggs and
Coldwater’s Rykert Frisinger.
Also note: The 48th edition of
the Michigan PGA Girls’ Junior
Championship this year will be
played today and Friday, June 20-21,
at Washtinaw Golf Club in Ypsilanti.
As of this past Monday (June 17), no
local players were listed on the tour-
ney’s field of competitors.

The local Ladies Interclub golf
group held a 2024 monthly meet at
Duck Lake Country Club in Albion
on June 10, and several players
turned in fine scores.
