Multiple hundreds of people turned
out in the high heat and humidity
Saturday, July 13 to enjoy a day
of fun at the Washington Heights
United Methodist Church and
Community carnival which offered
an entirely free day of food, festivi-
ties, games and resources.
“It was a community carnival and
car show,” said Pastor Monique
French. “As the Hub of Hope, we
want to reinstill hope in this com-
munity. We had community resource
information, we had entertainment,
just to try to instill a day of hope.
You know, there’s so much disin-
vestment in this community so we
wanted to show the community some

es and organizations got together to
put on this event.”
The event also featured a mechani-
cal bull for attendees to ride, a
mini-train ride around the grounds,
appearances by the Calhoun County
Sheriff’s Office and Calhoun County
Clerk Kimberly Hinkley, as well
as representatives from a variety of
churches and organizations.
“This is our third year,” said
French, who is also spearheading the
construction of new homes in the
Washington Heights neighborhood
on a nearby empty lot. “I thought it
was wonderful (the turnout). We had
