“Celebrating Women in the United
States Military” was the goal of
one Girl Scout, 13-year-old Emilyn
Vining of Battle Creek.
In November 2023, Emilyn had her
first meeting with her adult mentor,
30-year Girl Scout volunteer Wendy
Kropp.
Kopp said they began discussing
ideas on how best to make Emilyn’s
vision into a working plan.
Emilyn wanted to create something
she could ask Capt. Oscar Brady
American Legion Post 298 members
to display on the outside of their
building.
The two began discussing how best
to honor women in uniform who have
or are currently serving the nation.
Kopp suggested Emilyn consider
painting separate barn quilts incor-
porating the colors of each military
branch, with a standardized female
inset design for the look of unifor-
mity.
Emilyn set out to research and
design, while Kopp said she secured
a place for Emilyn to work and paint.
“And, the very labor intensive proj-
ect began for Emilyn to earn the sec-
ond highest award a Girl Scout can
earn: the Silver Award,” explained
Kopp.
On Valentine’s Day, Emilyn pro-
posed her big project to members of
the Post, who approved her idea.
She next approached Lowe’s with
her detailed plan and “they gave gen-
erously the supplies needed: three
boards measuring 4-by-8 feet, primer,
paint and other items,” said Kopp.
Emilyn completed her project in
time to “bridge” from cadette to
senior level Girl Scout in a ceremony
on June 1.
On Aug. 6, Emilyn’s project was

Post Commander Josh Whitfield
presented a Certificate of
Commendation.
Jennifer Cramutolo, president of
American Legion Auxiliary 298, was
also present.
Battle Creek Mayor Mark
Behnke delivered a Certificate of
Recognition, and state Rep. Jim
Haadsma presented Emilyn with a
State of Michigan Special Tribute.
The boards will soon be hung out-
doors for the public to view.
