her family, and most especially her
mom, Lauren Vining, for hours
of driving, encouragement and
unwavering support.

Emilyn Vining’s quilt boards honoring military servicewomen will hang
outside Capt. Oscar Brady American Legion Post 298.

Emilyn has been a member of
Troop 80231, Girl Scout Heart of
Michigan, since kindergarten.
She will begin work on her Gold
Award, the highest award a regis-
tered Girl Scout can earn.

always the last artist but they always
take me back every year so I’m
always thankful.”
Emily Hickey, 11, drew a whimsi-
cal depiction all of the trouble that
cats can cause.
Keira Babik of Portage drew a
dragon in her debut appearance at the
Chalk BC Chalk Art Festival.
“I like it,” she said of the festival.

“I’m going to be here again next
year, probably. I came here last year
and I saw it and I wanted to do it.
This is my first time doing chalk
art.”
Artist Kayla Davis of Battle Creek
participated for the third consecutive
year.
The California native drew a color
aquatic scene.
“The nostalgia of it,” she said
when asked why she returns every
year. “In high school, we would do

the yearly chalk drawings at the end
of the year for art classes so it’s just
something for me to reconnect with
my artistic side and let go of all the
responsibilities as an adult.”
According to Mayes, her annual
Chalk BC event is the only one in
southwest Michigan.
Friday’s event was altered slightly
when the day began with rain show-
ers. The festival was moved from
the main concourse to the flanking
pavilions to shelter the work from the

destruction water.
Mayes also took the competition
out of the mix and simply provided
some cash and chalk to each of the
participants.
“I’m always amazed at the amount
of talent the chalk artists bring to the
event,” said Mayes, who also partici-
pates in events in Grand Rapids, Ann
Arbor and Zeeland. “The talent is
pretty great.”

Consumers Energy expects to
power 1,500 new fast-charging loca-
tions for electric vehicles by the end
of the decade.
The forecast is part of Consumers
Energy’s Transportation
Electrification Plan that it is filing
with state regulators, the Jackson-
based utility company said in a press
release.
In the report, Consumers noted suc-
cesses in residential and business EV
(electric vehicle) programs; vehicle
charging at night, which helps the
electric grid; and offered a plan for
new rebates for battery-powered pub-
lic EV chargers.
“Despite some of the naysayers
in the news lately, the trends in EV
growth are unmistakable. EV num-
bers in Michigan have tripled since
the end of 2020, and we’re seeing
strong signs growth will continue,”
said Lauren Snyder, Consumers
Energy’s vice president of customer
experience.
Consumers Energy today has pro-
vided more than 135 rebates for loca-
tions for public fast-chargers that can
fully power an EV’s battery in less
than half an hour, the company said.
The energy provider expects more
than 1,500 loca-
tions, each with
four or more
fast-chargers,
will be built
over the rest of
this decade as
EV numbers
climb.
“Most EV
charging takes
place overnight
at home, but

tions provide confidence for drivers
as they travel long distances across
Michigan for work or pleasure,” the
press release stated.
To support that growth, Snyder
said Consumers Energy will start
offering rebates next year for the
next generation of fast-chargers.
