CCMCF staff members pose for a group photo before the Thursday open
house. (Shopper News photo by Shelly Kehrle-Sulser)
ways she and her staff never imag-
ined could happen.
“What started as a two-week shut-
down turned into several months of
changes that included things such
as no new admissions for several
months,” said Cornish.
The facility was entirely closed to
visitors for more than six months
and then, there was a period when
families had to make appointments
to visit.
“And even then, we were required
to keep residents distanced from their
family members,” she said.
Residents often dined in their
rooms or socially distanced at tables
in the dining rooms, hallway door-
way activities took place instead
of large group activities to allow
distancing and no volunteers or live
entertainment were allowed in.
“I do want to give credit to a few
amazing volunteers who did some
virtual volunteering,” she said, “and
visited residents via Facetime, and
our dedicated pet therapy volunteer
Carol who continued to come out
here every week, even through the
winter, to visit through the windows
with residents.”
The facility, owned by Calhoun
County government, also had a
temporary closure of the Marian E.
Burch Adult Day Care for nearly
three years, she said.
“Staff and residents alike were
tasked with adjusting routines, some-
times multiple times a day to keep
up with regulatory guidance and
changes from the Centers for Disease
Control,” said Cornish.
As a result of the situation, resident
census declined, she said.
“We are thankful for the State
of Michigan’s temporary ‘Non-
Available’ bed plan policy during
this time. The facility was able to
take advantage of the opportunity to
take some of our 120 beds offline for
a period of time.”
That, she explained, allowed the
facility to not be penalized financial-
ly for having a large number of beds
unoccupied.
“Out of 120 beds, at one time, we
had as many as 38 beds offline,” she
said. “Initally, the beds were taken
offline due to the decrease in refer-
rals of people wanting to place their
loved one in a nursing home.”
Eventually, she said, the empty
beds were also related to ongoing
staffing challenges.
“I am proud to say that here at
Calhoun County Medical Care
Facility,” she said, “we have main-
tained the same staffing ratios we
have always been known for in pre-
pandemic. When staffing and census
both declined, we were able to con-
