Jim Cummings (far right) and his first band, The Elements, in the mid-1960s.

still plenty.”
Cummings has also worked over
the years as a professional actor,
appearing in regional and national
theatrical productions (as lead actor)
of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Little
Shop of Horrors,” “My Favorite
Year,” “Miss Saigon,” “Ring of Fire”
and more.
He has also appeared in films and
industrial videos.
“I’ve done it all,” he said. “I’ve had
a wonderful life.”
Currently, Cummings and his band
are working on their ninth album.
“All our albums have been first-
class albums,” he said. “This is a hell
of a band. They are at a level that

is scary good. These guys are just
really good.”
(A note about the band: Long-time
Rare Earth drummer Floyd Stokes
has been practicing with the band
and will be playing with the band at
the Franke Center show on Sept. 14.)
Cummings may not be performing
as often these days, but he said he
has never stopped playing and has
kept the quality and preparations as
high as he could make it.
“It’s still fun to play, but it’s still
my job,” he said. “I give it all I can,
and I demand a lot of my band. We
rehearse a lot; that’s what it takes.
Most bands don’t, especially when
they get to a certain point, and then
they don’t rehearse much anymore.
“My number one credo is talent is
no excuse for bad behav-
ior. I don’t care how good
you are. I’m not going to
put up with drunk, stupid
and mean. ... If you’re
given a gift, use it. If you
don’t, as far as I’m con-
cerned, you’re just wast-
ing it; you’re just throw-
ing it away.”
Cummings said his
Marshall show could very
well be the last time he
performs in this area.

“Although this certainly may be
one of the last concerts I do in the
area that I grew up in, we have
already booked a few tour dates for
next year,” he said. “The problem is,
it’s such a rare exceptional band, that
we all feel that we should continue,
at least until we don’t feel that any of
us are performing at the level that we
always have.
“Our percussionist, Yeshwua, has
had to step back this year due to
health and physical issues, and for
now, I have not replaced him. I’m
presently producing our ninth album,
and the songs are so wonderful. I
don’t want to stop just
yet. But we all have to be
realistic, and when I feel
I’m not delivering what
our audience expects, I’ll
say goodbye. But this
Franke Center date is a
special one since there are
no plans to perform again
in this area. I hope it’s a
good turnout.”
