We Do Residential and Commercial Work

As summer is underway and fami-
lies go to pools, lakes and beaches,
the Calhoun County Public Health
Department is working with Region 5
Medical Control Authority Network
to raise awareness about water safety
and prevention tips to keep families
safe this summer.
The Health Department (CCPHD)
says summer swim swimming tips
include:
“Know how to swim; taking swim
lessons reduces the risk of drowning.

“Wear a life jacket. They can save
lives by keeping you afloat if you
find yourself in water unexpectedly.
“Don’t swim alone. Always make
sure you have someone with you
when you go swimming.
“Try to pick places to swim that
have lifeguards on duty if it is pos-
sible.
“Pay attention to any posted signs
or flags at the beach.
“Avoid alcohol while swimming.

and coordination.”
Supervising children in water safe-
ty tips include:
“Do not drink alcohol while super-
vising children.
“Designate a responsible adult to
supervise closely and constantly
when children are in or near water,
including home pools.
“Learn CPR. Accidents can hap-
pen in the water, and being prepared
could save a life.”
Additionally, lakes and rivers have
hidden hazards, such as dangerous
currents or waves, rocks or vegeta-
tion, and limited visibility.
The agencies recommend chcking
the weather forecast before engaging
in activities in, on or near water.
Local weather conditions can
change quickly and cause
dangerous flash floods,
strong winds and thun-
derstorms with lightning
strikes.
It’s important to avoid
bodies of water during
these moments and seek
shelter if weather condi-
tions start to turn unsafe,
the CCPHD said.
“Our mission is to ensure
that every member of our
community can enjoy the

water safely this summer,” said Eric
Pessell, health ffficer at the Calhoun
County Public Health Department.
“By partnering with the R5MCAN,
we aim to provide vital information
and resources to prevent drownings
and promote healthy swimming prac-
tices.”
“Water safety is a shared respon-
sibility,” added Region 5 Medical
Control Authority Network
(R5MCAN), Calhoun County EMS
Medical Director Dr. Stephanie Van
Alsten. “Through this partnership
with CCPHD, we hope to reach as
many families as possible with life-
saving information and encourage
proactive measures to keep our chil-
dren and communities safe.”
