The Harper Creek boys had some
talented competition to chase at the
Kalamazoo Invitational Wednesday,
Aug. 28.
The Beavers were second behind
only the Kalamazoo Central varsity
boys’ cross country team, a squad
with a handful of guys back from
the team that placed fourth at the
MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 1
Cross Country Finals in 2023.
The Maroon Giants finished the
afternoon with 42 points.

The Beavers were second with 78
points ahead of Hackett Catholic
Prep 88, Edwardsburg 98 and Berrien
Springs 102 among the top five teams
in a field of eight full boys’ squads.
One of the Beavers’ own return-
ing state qualifiers from a year ago,
senior Dominic Lowrie, beat out
the top two Kalamazoo Central run-
ners but was second overall behind
Hackett junior Marek Butkiewicz.
Butkiewicz won the race in 16 min-
utes 44.8 seconds. Lowrie was the
only other guy to break that 17-min-
ute mark with a final time of 16:44.8.
The Harper Creek boys’ team also

had junior Cooper Gardner tenth in
18:12.2 and sophomore Christian
Ayres 16th in 18:38.1. A pair of
seniors rounded out the team’s top
five. Owen Hunter hit the line 26th in
20:24.9 and Jordan Lindauer was fifth
in 20:30.2.
Hudsonville raced to victory in the
girls’ meet with 37 points ahead of
Sturgis 62, Hackett 77, Harper Creek
114 and Kalamazoo Central 117 in
the top five of their eight-team com-
petition.
The Beaver team had three juniors,
three sophomores and a freshman
among its scoring group of seven.

Junior Julia Faber led the way with a
ninth-place time of 21:45.7. Beaver
freshman Rylee Zumer placed 17th in
23:05.0 and was the fastest freshman
girl at the race.
The top five for Harper Creek also
included sophomore Layla Silkworth
19th in 23:19.9, sophomore Elizabeth
Antes 39th in 25:20.9 and junior Ellie
Feneley 46th in 26:06.4.
Sturgis junior Berkley Holtz was the
individual champion on the girls’ side
with a time of 19:30.3 which had her
nearly a minute ahead of Kalamazoo
Central senior Annie Alkema who
was the runner-up in 20:27.1.

Only one of state’s top D1 teams better than Harper boys in K-zoo
