Only an Otsego team with nearly
everyone back from a squad that
was tenth at the MHSAA Lower
Peninsula Division 2 Cross Country
Finals in 2023 was better than the
Battle Creek Lakeview varsity
boys Wednesday at the Southwest
Michigan Rustbuster XC Invitational.
Otsego dominated the day with the
Bulldog boys winning with 48 points
and the Bulldog girls taking their
competition with a score of just 23
points.
The Lakeview boys beat out Three
Rivers and Plainwell for the runner-
up spot. The Spartans finished with
88 points in the competition with
13 full teams. Three Rivers had 89
points and Plainwell 90.
Lakeview senior Jonah Bills led his
team with a season-best time of 17
minutes 18.72 seconds that put him in
seventh place individually.
All seven of the Spartan scorers
were among the top 30 finishers in
the race. Freshman Karson Lewis
was the team’s number two with his
best time yet. He hit the finish line
12th in 17:29.02. The Lakeview boys
also had senior Alex Rogers 20th in
17:57.23, freshman Eli Demlow 25th
in 18:13.75 and junior Bray Mentzer
27th in 18:24.52 among its top five.
Sophomore Carter Hughes was 18th
and freshman Jackson Duval 29th.
Three Rivers senior Sullivan
Zietlow won the boys’ race in
16:07.35 and was well ahead of
Mattawan junior Owen Fisher who
was the runner-up in 16:51.51.
Hopkins’ junior Jack Estelle and
Plainwell junior Donovan Ryan also
both broke that 17-minute mark on
the day.
Plainwell beat out Gobles on a tie-
breaker to finish second in the girls’
contest. Those two teams both tal-
lied 104 points to finish well behind
the champs from Otsego. Lakeview
wasn’t far off their pace with 112
points in fourth place in the field of
14 full girls’ teams.
Spartans near the top at RustBuster race
Junior Lilamae Frank led the
Lakeview ladies with a 12th-place
time of 21:40.17. Senior Evelyn
Calow was right behind in 14th
with a time of 21:56.28. Sophomore
Amelia Kraemer placed 27th overall
in 23:13.00.
A trio of new varsity Spartans
were just behind Kraemer. Junior
Georgia Micklewright came in 28th
in 23:14.39, sophomore Olivia King
was 31st in 23:26.86 and freshman
Ayla Frantz placed 38th in 23:59.15.
Another freshman, Olivia Sowton,
rounded out the seven scorers for the
Bulldogs finishing in 42nd.
Otsego had six of the top ten rac-
ers in the girls’ contest led by junior
Emma Hoffman who hit the finish
line in 17:53.36. Gobles sophomore
Libby Smith was the runner-up after
a while in 19:19.79 and Fennville
sophomore Isabelle Sliter came in
third in 19:51.19 with four Bulldogs
behind her one after another after the
20-minute mark.
Paw Paw was fifth in the girls’ race
with 167 points ahead of Mattawan
169, Three Rivers 169, Hopkins 206,
Fennville 214 and Vicksburg 238 in
the top ten.
The top ten in the boys’ team
standings also included Mattawan

The Lakewood varsity football
team is unbeaten under new head
coach Tim Swore. The Vikings
opened the 2024 varsity football sea-
son with a 27-6 victory at Pennfield
Thursday night, Aug. 29, in its new
coach’s first ballgame.
James Crum Jr. led Lakewood’s
attack with 100 yards rushing and a
touchdown. Freshman quarterback
Max Thrun threw two touchdown
passes, one each to Seth Willette
and Christian Harton, and Ethan
Goodemoot rushed for another score
for the Vikings.
Willette had a team-high five
tackles for the Viking defense, and
a couple of lost fumbles hurt the
Pennfield team’s chances of putting
more points on the scoreboard
Isaiah Eakins-Gray scored the lone
Pennfield touchdown in the opening
quarter, a score set-up by a long kick
return following the Vikings’ final
touchdown.
Lakewood scored once in each
quarter. Goodemoot finished off a
first-quarter drive with a one-yard
Pennfield shut out in
final quarters against
Lakewood
TD run, and Lakewood led 7-6 after
one quarter.
A 23-yard TD pass from Thrun
to Christian Harton upped the
Lakewood lead to 14-6 at the half.
Crumm scored on a three-yard run
in the third quarter. The dagger in
the end was a 63-yard scoring strike
down the middle from Thrun to
Willette in the fourth.
The Panthers go on the road Friday,
Sept. 6, to take on Kelloggsville
and then are home for back-to-back
ballgames including the Interstate-8
Athletic Conference opener against
Harper Creek Sept. 20.
Those Harper Creek Beavers
opened their season with a 44-0 wal-
loping of Lakeview Thursday eve-
ning jumping out to a 24-0 lead in
the first quarter.
