The Lakeview School District,
Pennfield Schools, Battle Creek
Public Schools and Harper Creek
Community Schools will hold a joint
school board session on Monday,
Sept. 23.
The primary focus of the meeting

  • the first joint session of these four
school boards in several years – will
be a discussion of recent state and
    federal legislation, highlighting sig-
    nificant policy changes that impact
public education in the Battle Creek

area and across Michigan.
“By bringing together board mem-
bers from all four districts serving
the greater Battle Creek area, this
joint meeting aims to foster a spirit
of teamwork and identify common
interests, which are crucial to unlock-
ing the full potential of our respec-
tive educational systems,” said Eric
Greene, president of the Lakeview
School District Board of Education.
“As we gather to learn together
and hear each other’s perspectives,

our districts can collectively create a
more cohesive and effective approach
to education that benefits every stu-
dent in our community,” Greene said.
The meeting, which is open to
the public, will take place at 6:15
p.m. inside the Black Box Theatre
at Lakeview High School, 15060 S.
Helmer Road.
The idea for the joint meeting was
conceived earlier this year when
leaders from each of the four boards
began meeting monthly to discuss

opportunities for collaboration that
would benefit students in all four
districts, according to Wendy Meyer,
director of communications and
enrollment for the Lakeview School
District.
While Lakeview is hosting the Sept.
23 session, the leaders intend for
other districts to host future joint ses-
sions.

City of Battle Creek contrac-
tors began construction activities at
Claude Evans Park on Sept. 9, said
spokesperson Breanne Humphreys.
On Sept. 9, crews started work-
ing to clear the lot north of Helen
Montgomery Avenue to make way
for new parking lots and other
improvements at the Washington

Heights area park, located at 320 N.
Washington Ave.
Once the north lot is cleared, Helen
Montgomery Avenue will be closed
between Hudson Street and Parkway
Drive for the construction of the new
parking lots and other enhancements.
In addition to new parking lots,
the Claude Evans Park improvement

Claude Evans Park improvements underway

project will deliver a new cul-de-sac
at the south end of Hanover Street,
a retention pond for stormwater, and
additional lighting and cameras for
enhanced safety.
The park will remain open during
construction, with minor diversions.
A portion of the existing parking lot
on Helen Montgomery Avenue will
be closed, and residents on Hanover
Street will need to take alternate
routes to access the park.
Driveway access for residents
should not be obstructed, and the

city will notify residents in advance
if Republic Services’ yard waste,
recycling and garbage pickups will be
impacted during construction.
As a reminder, the park’s splash
pad is now closed for the season, as
well.
Work hours during the improve-
ment project will generally be 7 a.m.
to 7 p.m., Monday-Friday, with occa-
sional work on Saturdays.
The bulk of construction is expect-
ed to wrap up by Nov. 30.
