4:9b; 83:11b; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 337:42b).
In the intercalary month (May/June) of 635, envoys from Kashgar
to the T’ang court presented fine horses (Chiu T’ang shu 198:10b; Ts’e-
fu yüan-kuei p.5024; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 337:42b).
In the 2nd month (Mar./Apr.) of 636, envoys from Kashgar were
received at the T’ang court (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 637) of the Chinese year 636,
envoys from Kashgar were received at the T’ang court (Ts’e-fu yüan-
kuei p.5024).
In 639, envoys from Kashgar offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 3:6b;
Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 337:42b).
In the 9th month (Sep./Oct.) of 659, Emperor Kao-tsung gave the
unrealistic order to establish Chinese commanderies and prefectures
out of Kashgar, Tashkent, Kabådh§n, Kish, M§imargh, Bukhara,
Tokharia, Yi-ta, etc. (Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6317).
In 698, envoys of the king of Kashgar offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5026).
In 728, Emperor Hsüan-tsung sent the Director of the Grand Judge
to recognize the king of Kashgar (Chiu T’ang shu 198:10b; Wen-hsien
t’ung-k’ao 337:42b).
On Feb.8, 753, the New Year’s Day, a chief from Kashgar congratu-
lated at the T’ang court and was presented with a purple robe and a
fish wallet (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5030; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 337:42b).


THE SOUTHERN SILK ROUTE


Chu-chü-po


Chu-chü-po was situated on the Southern Silk Route southeast of
Kashgar. According to Hsin T’ang shu 221A:10b, its first mission to
China was to the Northern Wei between 435 and 440. There were no
documented relations between Chu-chü-po and the Six Dynasties.
In 635, Chu-chü-po envoys were received at the T’ang court (Hsin
T’ang shu 221A:11a).
On Jan.23, 637, Chu-chü-po envoys were received at the T’ang
court (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6123).
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 638) of the Chinese year 637, Chu-
chü-po envoys were received at the T’ang court (T’ang hui-yao 99:
19b).
