In 639, Chu-chü-po envoys, together with Kashgar, offered regional
objects (Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 337:42b).
Between 713 and 741, Chu-chü-po was annexed by the T’ang (Hsin
T’ang shu 221A:11a).
Khotan
Khotan was the next great oasis on on the Southern Silk Route,
travelling east from Chu-chü-po. Its Chinese name since Han times
was Yü-t’ien. For the Six Dynasties, four missions are recorded from
Khotan to Liang and 13 to Northern Wei.^27
On Feb.4, 615, the New Year’s Day, Emperor Yang of Sui gave
a great banquet for the envoys from Khotan and other states (Sui shu
4:9b; 83:11b; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 337:42b).
In 632, envoys from the king of Khotan to the T’ang court presented
a jade belt. Emperor T’ai-tsung responded with a letter (Chiu T’ang shu
198:11a;Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 337:41a).
In the 2nd (Feb./Mar.) and 9th month (Oct./Nov.) of 635, envoys
from the king of Khotan offered regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5024).
In the 2nd month (Mar./Apr.) of 636, Khotan envoys were received
at the T’ang court (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
In 639, Khotan envoys offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 3:6b).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 642, Khotan envoys offered regional
objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
On Feb.2, 645, the New Year’s Day, Khotan envoys congratu-
lated at the T’ang court and offered regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5024).
On Jan.30, 648, the New Year’s Day, Khotan envoys offered gifts
(Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5025).
At the end of 648, a son of the king of Khotan presented 300 camels
(Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 337:41a).
In the intercalary month (Jan./Feb., 649) of the Chinese year 648,
the king of Khotan, Fu-she-hsin, paid a personal visit to the T’ang
court. One of his sons entered the imperial bodyguards. After T’ai-
tsung had died on July 10, 649, the image of the still-living Fu-she-
hsin was carved in stone and placed at the grave mound. Kao-tsung
