kent offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5031).
In 763,^8 envoys from Tashkent offered gifts (Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao
339:55a).
In 772, envoys from Tashkent offered gifts (T’ang hui-yao 99:15b).
In the autumn of 777, envoys from Tashkent offered gifts (Chiu
T’ang shu 11:10b).
Samarkand
The T’ang sources consider Samarkand (K’ang) as a sucessor of Sog-
diana (K’ang-chü) of Han times (Sui shu 83:8a; Chiu T’ang shu 198:
13b;Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6091).^9
Between 605 and 617, envoys from Samarkand once offered regional
objects to the Sui court (Sui shu 83:9a).
In the 6th month (June/July) of 624, envoys from Samarkand
offered fine horses to the T’ang court (T’ang hui-yao 99:18a; Ts’e-fu
yüan-kuei p.5023).
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 627 of the Chinese year 626, envoys
from the king of Samarkand presented fine horses (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5023).
In the 5th month (June/July) of 627, envoys from Samarkand offered
gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5023; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 338:47a).
In 628, envoys from the king of Samarkand presented fine horses
(Chiu T’ang shu 198:14a).
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 632) of the Chinese year 631, Samar-
kand offered the T’ang an alliance.^10 Emperor T’ai-tsung rejected it
(Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6091).
On Apr.28, 635,^11 Samarkand presented a lion. T’ai-tsung ordered
the Inspector of the Imperial Library to write a fu about it (Chiu T’ang
shu 3:3b; 198:14a; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
