In 637,^12 Samarkand presented [seedlings of] gold and silver peach
trees. T”ai-tsung ordered that they be planted in a park (Chiu T’ang
shu 198:14a; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
In the 2nd month (Mar./Apr.) of 639, envoys from Samarkand
offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 3:6b; Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 642, envoys from Samarkand
offered regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
On Jan.26, 643, the New Year’s Day, envoys from Samarkand to
the T’ang court presented regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
On Feb.14, 644, the New Year’s Day, envoys from Samarkand to
the T’ang court presented regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
On Feb.2, 645, the New Year’s Day, envoys from Samarkand
congratulated at the T’ang court and offered regional objects (Ts’e-fu
yüan-kuei p.5024).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 647, Samarkand offered regional
objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024). In the 3rd month (Apr./May), Samar-
kand presented yellow peaches, as big as goose eggs. The colour was
like gold. They were also called golden peaches^13 (T’ung-tien 193:18a;
Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5025). On Sep.21, envoys from the king of Samar-
kand offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 3:10b-11a).
On Jan.30, 648, the New Year’s Day, envoys from Samarkand to
the T’ang court offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5025).
In the 4th month (Apr./May) of 654, envoys from Samarkand
offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5026).
In 658,^14 Emperor Kao-tsung established the imaginary K’ang-chü
Area Command and appointed the king of Samarkand as its Military
Governor (T’ang hui-yao 99:18a-18b; Wen-hsien t’uing-k’ao 338:47a).
In the 10th month (Nov./Dec.) of 679, envoys from Samarkand
offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5026).
In 696, the Empress Wu recognized the king of Samarkand and
appointed him General-in-chief of the Resolute Guards of the Left
(Chiu T’ang shu 198:14a).

(^14) The date is according to T’ang hui-yao.Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao has 650-656. How-
ever, Emperor Kao-tsung established other Area Commands in 658, so that this
date should be correct.
