In the 11th month (Nov./Dec.) of 653, envoys from the king of
Kabådh§n offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5025).
In the 9th month (Sep./Oct.) of 659, Emperor Kao-tsung gave the
unrealistic order to establish Chinese commanderies and prefectures
out of Kashgar, Tashkent, Kabådh§n, Kish, M§imargh, Bukhara,
Tokharia, Yi-ta, etc. (Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6317).
In 731, the king of Samarkand requested recognition of one of his
sons as king of Kabådh§n. Emperor Hsüan-tsung complied (Chiu T’ang
shu 198:14a-14b; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 338:47b). This would mean that at
that time Kabådh§n or part of it was a dependency of Samarkand.
In the 3rd month (Apr./May) of 742, envoys from the king of
Kabådh§n^18 presented horses and regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5029;Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 338:48a).
In the 7th month (Aug./Sep.) of 744, envoys from Western Ka -
bådh§n presented horses and valuables (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5030).
Some time in 744, Hsüan-tsung conferred on the king of Kabådh§n
the title of King Who Cherishes Virtue(T’ang hui-yao 98:15b; Wen-hsien
t’ung-k’ao 338:48a).
In 745, Hsüan-tsung received a letter from the king of Kabådh§n
(T’ang hui-yao 98:15b).
In 752, envoys from the king of Kabådh§n proposed to the T’ang a
joint attack on the black-robed Arabs.^19 This was one year after the
Chinese defeat by the Arabs at the Talas River. Hsüan-tsung gave the
envoys a banquet but did not respond (T’ang hui-yao 98:15b).


Ho


Ho was situated Northwest of Samarkand.
On Feb.4, 615, the New Year’s Day, Emperor Yang of Sui gave
a great banqet for envoys from Ho and other states (Sui shu 4:9b; 83:
14a;Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 338:48a).
In the 5th month (June/July) of 627, envoys from Ho to the T’ang
court offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
In 641, envoys from Ho were received at the T’ang court (Wen-hsien
t’ung-k’ao 338:48a).
