In the 5th month (May/June) of 1159, the Inspector of the Imperial
Library and other Chin envoys to the Southern Sung court congratu-

On their return, they reported in an audience on Oct.17 that the Chin
State wanted friendship (Sung shih 31:16a, 17a). That was a falsehood
by the Dismissed Emperor, who actually was planning a war against
Southern Sung.
On Nov.1, 1159, the Southern Sung Empress Dowager, the Lady
Wei, died. On Nov.4, Kao-tsung sent envoys to Chin to announce

On Feb.9, 1160, the New Year’s Day, Southern Sung envoys con-

On Mar.12, 1160, Southern Sung envoys to the Chin court pre-
sented the testamentary gifts of the Empress Dowager. On Mar.15,
1160, Chin envoys to the Southern Sung court condoled and sacrificed.
On Mar.18, Southern Sung envoys were sent to the Chin court to
thank for the condolence (Sung shih 31:18a; Chin shih 5:18b).
On June 24, 1160, Chin envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of Kao-tsung^30 (Sung shih 31:19a).
A Southern Sung envoy, who had been sent to the Chin court
on Dec.18, 1159, returned on Sep.8, 1160, and reported that Chin
inevitably would break the covenant and that Southern Sung should
prepare for war (Sung shih 31:17b, 19b).

(^29) Sung shih 31:16a states that the envoys received their orders on the 1st day of
the 6th month (June 18). This means that the cyclical characters chia-ch’en must be
corrected to 30 chia-shen.
It fell on June 25.
