other Chin envoys arrived at the Southern Sung court for the same
purpose. They had received their orders on Nov.30, 1191 Neither
celebration took place, because both courts were suspended, the one
in Sung because of an illness of Kuang-tsung and the one in Chin
because of the mourning for the Empress Dowager (Sung shih 36:9a,
9b, 10a; Chin shih 9:13a, 13b).
On Oct.5, 1192, Southern Sung envoys arrived at the Chin court
to congratulate on the birthday of Chang-tsung. They had received
their orders on July 14. The birthday fell on Oct.8, but the celebra-
tion was cancelled because of the mourning for the Empress Dowager
(Sung shih 36:11a; Chin shih 9:17a).
On Oct.13, 1192, the Palace Inspector-general and other Chin
envoys to the Southern Sung court congratulated on the birthday of
Kuang-tsung. They had received their orders on Aug.30 (Sung shih 36:
11b;Chin shih 9:16b).
On Feb.2, 1193, Southern Sung envoys arrived at the Chin court
to congratulate on the New Year’s Day of Feb.4. They had received
their orders on Oct.26, 1192. But because of the mourning for the
Empress Dowager the court was suspended. On Jan.31, 1193, the
Vice Inspector-general of the Right and other Chin envoys arrived
at the Southern Sung court for the New Year’s Day of Feb.4. They
had received their orders in the 11th month (Nov./Dec.) of 1192 (Sung
shih 36:11b, 12b; Chin shih 9:16b, 18b; 10:1a).
On Sep.27. 1193, Chang-tsung of Chin for the first time celebrated
his birthday, after the long mourning period for his grandfather and
mother. He received the kings of the imperial house, the high offi-
cials, and the envoys of foreign states. The Southern Sung envoys had
received their orders on July 4 (Sung shih 36:13b; Chin shih 10:4a).
On Oct.3, 1193,^63 the Palace Assistant Secretary and other Chin
envoys to the Southern Sung court congratulated on the birthday
of Kuang-tsung. They had received their orders in the 7th month
(July/Aug.) (Sung shih 36:14a; Chin shih 10:3b).
On Jan.24, 1194, the New Year’s Day, Southern Sung envoys con-
gratulated at the Chin court. They had received their orders on Oct.15,
