146 chapter 4 ■ ZBrush for Detailing

You can also use the Skin1 brush included in ZBrush. When I use this brush I invert the
alpha and enable ZSub. With a smaller draw size, make circular motions over the model to
generate a waf fle or crosshatch skin texture similar to the one on the back of your hand.

Detailing the Character Horn
For the back horn we’ll use a combination of some of the new ZBrush 4 brushes. Begin by
loading a new brush called Dam Standard from the Lightbox Brush menu. Some specialty
brushes are stored in the Lightbox so as not to clutter the main Brush menu. Be sure to explore
the other brushes in this menu—there are many useful ones! Follow these steps to detail the
character horn using these special brushes:

You can move brushes from the main Brush menu to the Lightbox, or vice versa, by sim-
ply changing the folder in which they are stored. You can even move all but your favorite
brushes from the main menu to the Lightbox. Just as we organized alphas with subfold-
ers, you can store similar brush types in subfolders in Lightbox. To move brushes from
the main menu, copy the brushpreset folder from Pixologic\ZBrush4.0\ZData\
BrushPresets to Pixologic\ZBrush4.0\ZBrushes.

  1. Make sure the Stingerhead model is loaded on screen and in Edit mode (Figure 4.62).

  2. Select the Dam Standard brush by clicking the Lightbox button at the top left of the
screen. Click Brushes and scroll to the right to select the Dam Standard brush. You
can click between the icons in the Lightbox and drag to move them left and right.
