■ Details and Layers 147
- The Dam Standard brush behaves like a hybrid between the Slash brush and the stan-
dard brush. I find it useful for etching in subtle striations. The brush has a slight delay
due to its LazyMouse settings. Drag some strokes down the length of the horn. - Switch to the Slash brush. Turn up the Draw Size to near 65 and turn down ZIntensity
to 4. Turn on LazyMouse by pressing the L hotkey. Stroke along the length of the
horn to add finer striations (Figure 4.63). - The harshness of the lines can be knocked back with the Smooth brush. Be sure to dial
back the ZIntensity on the Smooth brush.

Adjusting the Detail Intensity
By isolating detail passes into layers and storing a morph target, we have given ourselves
several ways to adjust the intensity of the sculpting we just did.
If you find that the details layer is too strong, you can soften it by adjusting the layer
intensity. From the main Tool menu, open Layers and click in the Intensity slider on the details
layer. Set this to 0.5 and notice how the details are softened overall. Raising this value above 1
can make the details appear even stronger. Experiment with the Intensity sliders on both your
layers. Layers can be turned off entirely by clicking the eye icon.
When adding details to your character, you’ll find it beneficial to have a morph target
stored. The morph target we stored at the beginning of this section will allow you to soften
details or remove artifacts. Using the Morph brush can be similar to lowering the intensity
of your layer, with the benefit that you can soften just areas and not the entire details layer
(Figure 4.64).
