OF THE BIGGEST
STORIES FROM
PLANET TECH
The real reason to like OnePlus phones is
not that they’re clever; it’s that they get
you gushing geysers of hardware for a
polite dribble of cash. But tech nerds love
them for the extra stuff – and this year,
that has to mean 5G. So the OnePlus 8 and
8 Pro both have it. Maybe your town isn’t
tooled up for 5G yet, but it probably will be
before your next phone upgrade (unless
the world ends first).
So, Pro or vanilla? The 8 Pro gets you a
larger 6.7in screen with an 120Hz refresh
rate instead of 90Hz. “The best display
you will see all year,” says OnePlus. Its
cameras are the biggest upgrade, though.
On the menu here are 48MP sensors for
your standard and ultra-wide shooters,
plus an 8MP option with 3x optical zoom,
while a fourth cam spits out specialised
photos that look as if they’ve been through
an Instagram filter already.
Buy the standard OnePlus 8 and you get
slightly lower-end cameras, no zoom and
a basic 2MP macro instead of that colour
filter. But both have the same Snapdragon
865 CPU and a 4mm punch-hole cam up
front. So long, OnePlus 7T Pro’s motorised
selfie-cam. We’ll miss you.
