Ever since it introduced the first iPad
Pro back in 2015, Apple’s been trying
to convince us that its top-end tablet
is capable of doing everything a laptop
can – despite continuing to launch new
MacBooks (see panel opposite). Until now
that’s not been entirely accurate, but the
latest iPad Pro looks set to finally deliver
on the promise.
While hardware changes are minor – a
new A12Z Bionic chip, more RAM, more
storage as standard, Wi-Fi 6 support, and
an upgraded camera module with a LiDAR
scanner for AR – with the new backlit
cantilevered Magic Keyboard (from £299),
10hr battery life, and the fact that iPadOS
now works with a mouse or trackpad (see
p17), the iPad Pro finally has everything
it needs to convince us to embrace
the tablet life.
There’s a choice of two edge-to-edge
Liquid Retina display sizes (11in or 12.9in)
and four storage options: 128GB, 256GB,
512GB or 1TB. All you need to decide after
that is whether to ditch that clunky old
ThinkPad or not. We know what Apple
would tell you to do...

Range brew
The iPad Pro’s new
LiDAR scanner sits next
to the dual 12MP and 10MP
ultra-wide camera setup.
It measures distance, so
that AR tiger will really
look like it’s sitting in
your bath.
Port contagion
The full-size Magic
Keyboard offers an extra
USB-C port in the hinge,
so you can charge your
iPad Pro while leaving its
own USB-C port free for
other accessories.
Handy.
