to add them to the alpha channel, and they’ll become part
of the selection. When you’re done painting, click back on
the RGB channel in the Channels panel to make all the
channels visible again except for the Alpha Channel.
Step Four: Now that you’ve isolated a target frequency,
made it a luminance mask, and then cleaned it up as an
alpha channel, you can turn off the visibility of the Gradi-
ent Map adjustment layer by clicking its Eye icon in the
Layers panel.
Step Five: Go to Select>Load Selection, and in the Chan-
nels drop-down menu, choose the alpha channel you made
earlier, and click OK. This loads your selection and now you
can begin editing, as needed.
Step Six: With the river isolated, we converted the image
layer to a smart object (Filter>Convert for Smart Filters),
and used the Filter>Camera Raw Filter to bring out extra
tone and detail in the flowing water. After clicking OK, we
loaded the selection again and inverted it (Select>Inverse).
Then we used a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to
easily change the green summer scene to some autumn-
like colors. These edits help change the scene in a very
granular way.
