There are all sorts of oppor-
tunities to experiment with this
technique. For example, in this
image from Scott Valentine’s
article in the last issue of Photo-
shop User, adding extra stops in
the Gradient Map, and introduc-
ing colors in those stops, lets us
see exactly where the tones are
in the picture.
Once you have everything
separated the way you like, you
can change the value of the Gra-
dient Map stops to either white
or black. We were able to quickly
isolate the trees on the shore
using five position stops for the
Gradient Map. After creating the
alpha channel, and filling the bot-
tom half of the picture with white
pixels to remove all of the water
detail, we can now move to edit
just the trees in this image.
