field trip to the
Isles of Scilly
Each Seasalt collection is inspired by the company’s Cornish home
and heritage. For spring, they studied the sands and sea, f lowers and fields
of a small island archipelago 28 miles off Land’s End

T
he sand-fringed Isles of Scilly on
the edge of the Atlantic were the
location for our spring collection
research trip. Hunting for colour
and pattern inspiration, 28 miles
from Land’s End, the ever-changing weather
and dramatic landscapes are at the heart
of the simple beauty of the new collection.
From the Scillonian ferry, we drew the
dolphins and sea birds that we spotted diving
in the surf. Alongside empty white, sandy
beaches, we mapped winding paths, noting
the shades of the island boats bobbing in the
water and collecting sparkling quartz from the
sa nds. We ret ur ned each day, our sketchbook s
bulging with sunlit views, f lora and fauna.
The mild winters and warm summers here
provide an ideal habitat for tender exotic
plants. We studied the collection at Tresco
Abbey Garden – known locally as ‘Kew
without a roof’ – sketching leaves and delicate
coastal f lowers to bring home to our studio.
From t he f rag ra nt na rcissi f ields of t he
most northerly inhabited island, to the ozoney
smell of rock pools where we observed puffins
at play, we think our field notes bring a bit of
the bright Scilly Isles light and colour to the
stunning new Seasalt collection.
