marginalareasoldiers

bringthemto

Islamdom,noteven
inthesamelandsbefore
theybecame
Muslim.In
pre-IslamicEgypt,for
example,while
marginalareasoldiershad
somerolefromthetimeofthe

Egyptiansalmost
alwaysfoughtinthearmiesof
Egypt.Theypredominated
when
Egyptwas
independentand served
asauxiliarieswhen
foreigners(Libyans,Cushites,
Persians,Greeks,andRomans)ruled.
