higherstandardofqualityforeachsoldierinslavearmies.Along
withthesebenefits,the
procurementof
militaryslavesalso involvesome
special problems.As a
dynastydeclined instrength,itcould no
longeracquireitsslaves through
force(raiding,warfare,andsoforth)
buthadtopurchase
them.Yet,as the
dynastyweakeneditsresources
diminished,sothisex-pense grew
evermore burdensome.The Mamluks
of
Egyptcouldneitherreducetheirdependence
onnewrecruitsnorac-quirethem
inexpensively;theneedto
buyslavescontributedsignificantlytotheeconomictroublesofthe
government.TMThedistanceslavesusuallyhadtotravel
fromtheirhomelands
totheir
countryofserviceandthefragilityofthe
supplylinescouldalsocauseproblems.

on theTahiridstosend themslavechildrenre-duced Abbasid controlin northern Iranand added to the
Tahirids’

theOttomansdidnotcutoffthesupply
ofrecruitsfrom
theBlackSeaandthe
CaucasusareastotheMamlukkingdom,
oncethosetwo
powershadbecomeantagonistic,
continuestobafflehistorians.The
expenseandthe distance over which militaryslavestraveled
presentedtwodrawbackspeculiartoslavesoldiers,butonlyintimes ofdecline;theseproblems
