theythemselvesmade
hardlyanyconquestsoftheirown.Asa
consequence,theynearly alwayshadto
payfortheirslaves. Incontrastto theUmayyads,
who
purchasedalmost no slaves(andthose
onlyduring
the final
years),2sthe Abbasidspurchased nearly
alltheirs.
OnlyonrareoccasionsdidtheAbbasidsnothaveto
buytheslaves
theyneeded; in Hrfln
ar-Rashid’s time,100 and1,000slavescameaskhartj(generaltaxorland
tax)fromGilan,aswellas
1,000and
possibly4,000Turksfrom
Khurasan.29KhumsinthefirstAbbasidperiodwas
apparentlyfigurative,akindoftribute,3andonnooccasion
