Abbasidmovement,

militarysupportandits
rulingfamily.Earlierscholarswere
misledbythefactthat
Abbasid
supportcamefromKhurasanintothinkingthat
Iranians
gaveallthe
support;closerexaminationshows
thatmost
oftheKhurasaniswere
Arabianswhohadsettled
thereandbecomedetribalized,and
otherswereArabian
tribesmenem-ployedinthearmiesstationed
there.6The Abbasid
da’wa
(movement) appealed
directlytonon-tribesmen,toall
Muslimswhohadbeen
excluded
bythetribalorganizationof
society,andparticularlyto
non-Arabianseverywhere anddetribalized
ArabiansinKhurasan.67Despitethisantitribal
Abbasid
ideology,Abfi
Muslim,
throughmasterfulmaneuvering,
managedto
gainthesupportofArabiantribes-men
inKhurasanaswell.
Inorderto
accomplishthis,hehad
toidentifytheda’wawith
the
cas.abiyyaofthesoutherners[anArabian
tribalfaction]andthisiswhathe
succeededin
doing.Byadjustingthe
da’watothe
existingpoliticalcircumstances.AbfiMuslimwasableto
attracttohiscause,enbloc,thousandsofexcellent
fightersInits
final
stage[theAbbasids]
acquiredan
armywhichwas
mainlyArabinitsconstitution.The armies
which carried theAbbasids
to
victoryhadthreeKhurasanielements:
Arabiantribesmen,Arabian
nontribesmen,and
Iranian nontribesmen.
The Abbasid
armythus had
thesame
compositionas
everypreviousIslamicate
army,Arabianwarriorsand
non-Arabian
auxiliaries;the
majordifference
layin
the
organizationand
statusofthe
non-Arabians.Earlier
interpretationsof
theAbbasidtakeover
mistooktheAbbasids’
antitribal
policyforan
anti-Arabianone.Thetwocanindeedbe
easilyconfused, since itwas
theArabianswhobe-longedtotribes,but
theywere
verydifferent.The
Abbasidsdidnot
rebel
against Arabiansbut
againstthe
tribal
organizationwhich
profitedArabians
so
