generationslater.During
thefirst
sixtyyearsofAbbasidrule(132-95/747-811),
the
governmentdidnothaveunreliablesoldiers.Slavesandmawlashad
anotincon-siderable
militaryroleduring
thefirsttwo
generationsaftertheAbbasidtakeover,butitwasnotso
greatasearlier.
Nothingin-dicatesthatthe
armyatthistimehad
aneedfor
militaryslavery.Abbasid Weakness.
The
Umayyadsnever mobilizedtheirownforcesbuthad
toreachan
agreementwiththetriballeaders;still,theydid
usuallyarriveataconsensusand
preservedtheirruleoverallDfral-Islm.TheUmayyadregime
haditsshareofrebels,butit
vanquishedthemall
(untiltheAbbasids),main-tainedsomecontroloverallthelandsruledby
Muslims,and
continuedto
wagewarsof
expansion.TheAbbasidrecordwasfarless
impressive;theirtakeoverin132/750markedthe
endofMuslim
expansionandunity.
Thelast
significantmilitaryadvance occurredin InnerAsia, cul-minating
intheBattleofTalasandthe
occupationofTashkent
in133/751.69Raids
againstCanton
in 141/758, theAbbasid-T’ang
alliance
againstTibetin182/798,andintermittent
war-fare
againstByzantium
did
nothingto expand
