existenceofa
system,muchlesstore-createit.Inorderto
studythesystem,therefore,Ihavehadto
postulateitsexis-tence;the
followingtwo
assumptionsserveasthebasisofthisstudy:1.
Whenever soldiers ofslave
originsbecome adominant
militaryforce,a
systemmustexist
to
acquire,train,and
employthem.Slavescantakeon
support,auxiliary,
or
emergencyrolesforan
army
inan
unorganizedway,buttobecomea
majorinde-pendentpower
theymustbeused
systematically.Thisisnotatheory
butan
assumption;slaves
attained
predominantpowerinmanyIslamicate
dynastiesforwhichwehave
hardlyatraceofa system.

assumptionfinds some confirmation
ina
comparativereading
ofslave
systems.In
particular,twofactssupport
it:whena
trainingprogramisknowntoexist,slavesoften
acquireoverwhelmingimportance(forexample,theAb-
basids under
al-MuCtaid, the
Seljuks,
Mamluks,
Ottomans,TunisiaundertheBeys,andDarFur);outsideIslamdom,where
no
system
isknown
tohaveexisted,slavesnever
acquiredsuchpredominance.Althoughthesefactsdonot
logically
necessitatethefirst
assumption,they
reinforce
mybeliefinitscorrectness.- A
