byatleast617/1220.These
assumptionsarevitalforthe
studyofthefirstcaseof
militaryslavery.Thefirstknown
caseofslaves
dominatingan Islamicate
dynastyoccurred in247/861
whentheTurkishslavestookcontroloftheAbbasiddynasty.Onthebasisoftheabove
assumptions,asystemtotraintheseslavesmusthaveexisted
bythetimeal-Mueta.simrosetopower
in218/833.
It
mayhave
emergedatanearlier time,however--evenduring
the
Prophet’slifetime.
Accordingly,thisstudybeginswiththeveryfirstyearsof
Islamandconcludesinthe
year218/833,withfewreferencestolater
events,forIamassuming
theexistenceof
militaryslaverybyaboutthatdate.This
studycontainstwo
parts,ofthree
chapterseach:
partIplacestnilitaryslaveryin
itsgeneralIslamicatecontext;
partIIsearchesoutthefirstinstanceof
militaryslaveryand
explainsitsoccurrence.The
specificinquiry
in
partII
requiresthe
analyticalfools
shapedinthe
generaldiscussionandsomustfollowit.Chapter definesthe
militaryslaveandshowshowdistinctheisfromother
typesof
slaves;asthetermisused
here,heisaslavewhohasbeen
acquiredina
systematicmanner,trainedinan
organized
fashion,andthen
employedasa
professionalsol-dier.

chaptersurveysthe
generalrecordofslavesinwarfare
andconcludesthatwhile
theyfought
