usetheEnglishterm
"militaryslave"becauseitismoreuni-versal,
precise,andflexiblethanthe
equivalentsin
Islamicatevernaculars.
Althoughsomewordshavecometomean
militaryslave(notablyfat(,ghulZzm,kul,and
mamlftk),each
ofthemhasonlylimited
usageandnone
universallyacquiredthe
meaningof"militaryslave."In
otherwords,besideslimitationsintimeandplace,eachof
thesewords
alsohas
othermeanings;notoneofthemrefers
exclusivelyto
militaryslaves.Thislackof
specificitymight
resultfromthefactthatMuslimshavenever
recognizedslavesoldiersasadistinct
typeofslave
(seep.13).Oftheseseveral
terms,mamlfkhas
gainedthewidest
usageinorientalistliterature,thankstoits
propagationbyDavid
Ayaloninhis
manyworksonthis
subjectandtotherelativefameofthe
