government (andthis

ownershipmeansthatmilitaryslavesal-ways
breatherarefied
airand
keepcompanywith
the
powerful.Whilethedecisionto
purchasean
ordinaryslavecomesdownprimarilytoa
questionofeconomics
(canthemasteraffordhisdomestic
servicesordoeshe
gainfroma
slave’seconomicac-tivities?),acquisitionofamilitaryslave
dependsonmilitarycon-siderations.Asa
result,the
tradein
militaryslaves
hasadriveand
rhythmofitsown.From
themomentaruleror
notablepersondecidesto
acquiremilitaryslaves,helavishes
exceptionalcareonselectingrecruits.Specifically,theprospectiveownerseekstwo
qualities:
militarypotentialand
malleability.As
regardsthe
first,he
insistsongreater
capabilitiesthanthose
requiredof
ordinaryslaves;whileany
misfit
can
carrywateror
digfor
salt,afuturesoldierhastobear
graver
responsibilities.

preferencefor
youthsofnobleor-igins
andthe
highpricespaidfor
outstandingrecruits
reflectthemaster’sinterestin
findingthe
most
highlyqualified
pros-pectsas

So,while Indian slaves do not often
fight, Central Asian male
slavesalmostinvariablydo.
