listingoftheiractivitiescanbe
givenhere;indif-feringcircumstances,
theyundertakeeveryconceivable mili-taryduty.Unlikeordinaryslaves, theyhabituallybecomethemainstayofthearmies
theyserve.Andwhereas
ordinaryslavesbelong
to
privateindividuals,
militaryslaves
belongtoleaders;sotheformertendto
fightalongsidetheirmasters,whilethelatterform
largecorpsand
fightin
separateslaveunits.By
virtueoftheir
militarystrength,thelivesofthese mendiffer
remarkablyfromthoseof
ordinaryslaves.Farfrombeinglowlydomesticsorservile
laborers,theyenjoythe
respectandthe
powerofsoldiers.
Althoughslaves,theyare
partoftherul-ingelite;
theybeararms,haveaccesstotheruler,fill
importantpositions,and
enjoytheamenitiesofwealthand
power.Indeed,they
enjoymanyadvantageswhichmostfree
mencannotattainand,asaresult,theirslave
statuscarrieswithit
nostigma.Onthecontrary,
itbecomesa
badgeofdistinction; slavery,in
anex-traordinary
reversal,
givesaccessto
powerand
social
superioritywhichfreebirth
might
deny.Farfromconsidering
itahumilia-tion,freemencovet
thisstatusandslaves
jealouslyguardit.Noneof
this,of
course,holdstruefor
ordinaryslaves.The
powerheld
bymilitaryslavesenablesthemto
gaincontrolovertheirowndestinies.
Ordinary
slavesbecomefree
onlywhen
theirmaster
decidestomanumitthem.They
canfleeorrevolt,buttheseefforts
usuallyfail;
slaverevoltscancause
greatup-heavals and
bringgovernments
down,but
theydonot
placeslavesin
power
for
long.Howdifferentthesituationwithmili-tary
slaves!They
commonlyfreethemselvesthroughagradual
shiftinrelationswiththeirmaster.Withtime,
they
evolvefrombeing
hissubordinatesinto
beingan
independentmilitaryforce.This
opportunity
of
acquiringpowerfromwithinis
completelyclosedto
ordinary
slaves.
