support

Yet,thoughtheirmilitaryand
politicalimportancemakesmanumissionunthinka-
ble,itmakes
ipsimissionpossible;military
slavescanseizeforthemselvesthefreedomtheirmasternever
givesthem.Manumissionand
ipsimissionare
closelyrelated
yetverydif-ferent;someclarificationisinorderhere.Fora
militaryslave,ipsimissionis
byfarthemore
importantprocess;manumission,ifitoccurs,is
barelymorethana
formality.Whenthemastermanumits
militaryslaves,hehasnointentionof
givingupanyrealcontroloverthem,nordo
theyleavehim;
yet,iftheslavesipsimitthemselves,their
legalstatusremains
unchanged.Themaster’s
militarydependenceonhis
militaryslavesthushastwocontraryimplications;henever
voluntarilyrelaxescontroloverthem,but
theyhavethemeansto
escapehiscontrol
againsthiswill.The
double-edgedswordof
politicscutsboth
ways.Theeventofmanumissionmarksa
majorchangeinthestatusof
otherslaves,butitmatterslittlefor
militaryslaves
(unlessthemasterusesitasariteof
passage,asdidtheMamluksof
