proceededtolegitimizethis

pointbetraysthefundamental
insignificanceofmanumission.Intheother
example,nooneknewwhether
ornotIltutmish,theMuCizzisultanofDelhi
(r.607-33/1211-36)wasstill
legallyaslavewhenhebecameruler.
Onlywhenhis
op-ponentschallengedhis
legitimacyonthe
groundsthathewasaslavedidhemake
publichismanumissioncertificate,zsBoth
ofthesecasesshowhowmanumissionwasinthe naturalcourseofevents
oftenforgotten.A
comparativereadingin
militaryslavesystems
suggeststhat
manumissionoccurredinabouthalfthecases.Formerslaves
act as
independentprofessional soldiersforwhomfinancial
considerationshave
paramountimportance.As
long
astheirformer
master
paysthem
regularly,theyobeyhim;butwhennot,
theytendtotake
mattersinto
theirownhands.Appearances to the
contrary, militaryslaves dostill
differfundamentallyfrommercenaries.
Theyresemblemercenaries
intheirreadinesstoturn
againsttherulerwhofallsbehindinhispayments,but
theydifferinthat
mercenariesalwaysremainout-siders and
militaryslavesbecomeinsiders.
